The Awakening: A New Journey Begins

‘’Allow yourself to fulfil the destiny you signed up for, inherent in all our lives.’’
Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

I recently re-watched the movie ‘Avatar’ and on this particular viewing, I started to think about our human evolution; I truly believe that now, more than ever, humanity is undergoing the spiritual awakening process on a large scale. Individuals across the globe are waking up to experience a profound change in consciousness, awakening into something which is no longer based on concepts, lies and illusions of the physical world – a  sort of rebirth and connection to a greater life that is not dependent on external concepts or false realities.

Ramana Maharashi, the Indian spiritual teacher was once known to have said:

‘’All unhappiness is due to the ego. With it comes all your trouble.
If you would deny the ego and scorch it by ignoring it, you would be free.’’

Many go through life pursuing the demands of the ego mind, pursuing the emptiness of money, fame, power, and respect, all in an attempt to find meaning and happiness. This simply leads to expectations and wanting more and more. As Maharashi rightly pointed out, it is by ‘denying the ego’ that we can free ourselves of worldly troubles.

Awakening to a new journey, to the spiritual journey, is a very personal process and can be triggered by a multitude of external events, perhaps a disaster or by some horrific conditions: being imprisoned, experiencing abuse. It may be triggered by the death of someone close to you, especially premature death, for example if your child dies. Or perhaps you had built up your life and given it meaning and the conceptual meaning that you had given for some reason collapses or is invalidated. In all cases however, nothing makes sense anymore; life appears to no longer have any meaning or purpose.

The most painful experiences often teach us the greatest lessons about ourselves and help us in our spiritual growth, allowing us to emerge from the pain into a transformed state of consciousness where life, once again, has meaning again.  In their essence, spiritual awakenings mark the beginning of your initiation on the path of expanded awareness, with the deep realisation and understanding that nothing external has ever and can ever, bring you true fulfilment and happiness.

In retrospect, you come to realise that you had to go through what you did in order to bring about your transformation, your spiritual awakening, deep in the knowing that your true peace and joy is not caused by any situation. You come to the realisation that the realm of duality has opposites and that living a god-realised life means transcending duality so you no longer hold onto the physical world – you learn that opposites continue to happen but you rise above them. The whole process is perfect, right now, in this moment.

I am reminded of the words from John Newton’s song, Amazing Grace:

‘’I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.’’

Spiritual awakening is, in essence, an initiation into expanded consciousness. It is the moment your false-self transcends fear, confusion and the many lies and illusions of the physical realm in order to reconnect with higher consciousness and full awareness of the underlying love and peace present in every moment.

Spiritual awakening is, in the simplest sense, what Dr Wayne Dyer was referring to in his movie The Shift and is a process which challenges the very foundations you’ve built for how to live in the world and involves the realisation that the separation, limitation, beliefs and models for success and happiness in the physical world are rooted in illusion. Without awakening, one might stay on the path of the external in pursuit of the unfulfilling and illusory markers of success and happiness dictated by society.

Awakening is the beginning of an entirely new journey, a journey which cannot be described by the limitation of language; it can only be felt, lived through, witnessed and experienced by living with a sense of present awareness and peace in the recognition that you have a direct connection with Universal Divine energy.

As you go through the awakening process you may be feeling lost and confused. My advice is be gentle with yourself, honour where you are, and be filled with the knowing that life is unfolding exactly as it should be.

With much love and light

  1. Hi patrizia , I read this the other day and cycled back to it much as we do in the awakening process. you mention that through painful times can come our greatest lessons and move us along spiritually and I understand this from my own experiences. recently I am struck that within any event/emotion there is another or many other layers embedded. that within joy we can often spot anger and within grief we can find comfort in community and within anger we can recognise compassion and so it goes on. I am intrigued by this simplicity that the all is contained within and that once we embark on the journey the teachings/lessons are there waiting for the appropriate timing to reveal unto us. quite perfect when ypou think about it.
