The Art of Feeling

‘’When we numb the darkness, we numb the light.’’Brene Brown

I spent a very large part of my life avoiding painful emotions; all I wanted was to be happy, to feel safe and have inner peace. In my search for these feelings, I continuously pushed away other emotions I didn’t want to feel, believing that by repressing them, by running away from them, I would never have to deal with them and I could therefore experience happiness. Little did I know that by numbing my pain, by hiding from my confusion, my loneliness, my fear, I was simply robbing my soul of all the buried treasures that these feelings hold and which serve to lead us to something great; our ultimate transformation.

Feeling the depths of all our emotions, the anger, the pain, the frustration, the overwhelm, allows us to be fully human; feeling the emotions buried deep within us also allow us to know ourselves better and to become fully present and aware of who we truly are. In their essence, painful emotions are messengers providing us with the information we need to grow, emotionally and spiritually.

The mere fact of being human, of existing in physical form means every single one of us will experience some form of dark thought or negative feeling at some point in our lives; this is something that is shared by all humanity. We are not alone in the dark; every successful person, every spiritual teacher had to go through their own unprocessed emotional territory in order to come out the other side brighter and wiser. Knowing this inspired me and gave me the courage to open the box of treasure containing what I had been avoiding for many years. Deep within this treasure box, I found emotions that needed to be felt in order to move forward and find the happiness and inner peace I had been searching for my whole life.

Unfelt emotions are like a stagnant river no longer flowing; all emotions are vibrational energy and by not processing the darker, more painful emotions found at the lower end of the energy frequency, we deprive ourselves of accessing the feelings found at the higher levels of the spectrum.

Every feeling we have has something to teach us about ourselves and is an opportunity to heal on a deeper level. So don’t repress your feelings. Allow yourself to feel  everything, however painful that may be. Sit with the feeling. Don’t judge it; simply observe what comes up for you, acknowledge it and be gentle with yourself. Show yourself compassion for the imperfect yet perfect journey you are on.

Learning the art of feeling leads you to an amazing place; the art of feeling leads to your greatest transformation.

feel it to heal it

Sending you much love and light.
