Love at First Sight: A Letter to my Grandson

“Children are the living messages we send to a time we do not see.”
-Neil Postman

It’s been nearly a year since you made your entrance to the world and graced us with your beautiful, unconditional love, energy and smiles. Our connection began the moment you appeared to me in my dreams, whispering to my soul that you would be incarnating on this physical plane as a baby boy.

Holding you in my arms seconds after you were born is one of the most memorable and treasured gifts your mama could ever give me. I fell in love with you at first sight and touched by your pure energy, I could already see what a kind, funny, wise, curious and sensitive boy you will be. Your mama is all of these things.

So as your journey through life is approaching its first full cycle around the sun, I wanted to share some words of wisdom, some life lessons so you can enjoy a happy, meaningful and purposeful life. So when I’m no longer here in physical form, you will always have my words to look back on as you continue this adventure, this miracle, we call life.

  • Kindness is everything and costs nothing.

One of my favourite quotes is “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always”. Life will undoubtedly challenge you sweet darling. I’ve had my fair share just as your mama and daddy have had theirs. My advice to you is: Take the time to be patient with those around you and always remember that other people’s behaviour is more often than not driven by what’s affecting them. It’s rarely about you. Remembering this will get you through many a difficult situation. Be kind to others. Even the happiest of people on the outside fight battles on the inside you know nothing about. Your kindness could make all the difference in someone’s life. Always choose kindness over being right. Remember too that no one will care so much as to what you do, no one will care about your material possessions, the car you’ll one day drive or the amount of money you have in your bank. They will care about how you made them feel. They will care if you heard their voice, if they mattered to you.

  • Do your best in everything you do.

Learn all you can in whatever areas interest you, grow all you can and know that qualifications do not determine your outcome. You do. So do what is right for you and pour your heart and soul into whatever matters to you regardless of what others may think or say.

  • You can have, be and do anything you want in this world.

There are no limits to what you can achieve. Feel the truth in that. Feel it with all your heart. The people who achieve great things in life are those who believe they can. Another great quote I love is

‘’What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.’’
-Napoleon Hill

You can have anything. You can be and do anything. You can change this world for the better. Remember, you attract into your life whatever it is you believe you deserve, so believe in yourself and remember who you truly are: a spark of the divine which lives in you and through you.

  • Life’s greatest power is Gratitude

Know that you are blessed and be grateful every single day no matter what is going on. Life will challenge you, it will test you. But know always there are no mistakes and with a strong mind and an unbreakable spirit, nothing can ever defeat you. Know that you will never be defined by the circumstances of your life. The measure of your life will be how you react to your circumstances and in the toughest of moments, you will have the greatest opportunities for growth. Stay strong and know that this too shall pass. Every moment passes and every moment is an opportunity to learn and develop from. Be grateful every day for what you do have and life will reward you by giving you more to be grateful for. If you aren’t grateful for anything and find yourself complaining a lot, the universe will provide you with more things to complain about. These are universal laws, always remember that.

  • Remain true to yourself – Always.

Be authentic in everything you do. It’s really easy to be influenced by others and sometimes you may feel uncomfortable about the choices others are making. Listen to and trust your intuition, that inner voice, your gut feeling and go with what feels right. You will know when something doesn’t feel right because it doesn’t make you feel good. If you can master this early in your life, you’ll have a peaceful existence.

  • Everything happens for a reason.

Yes, even the most challenging, painful situations and events, those that don’t seem to make any sense, serve a purpose. You may not know what that reason is at the time but trust in the process of life. Your deepest wounds will be your greatest teachers. People too will come and go in your life and they all cross your path to teach you something about yourself. Some people stay for a short time, others are with you for many years. Be open to life and trust that everything unfolds exactly as it is supposed to.

  • Live life on your own terms

You were born with special gifts and talents, we all are, so embrace everything that’s unique about you. As you grow up, you will discover these talents and you’ll develop passions – passions that are an invitation to follow your heart and live your life purpose. If you want to be a painter, then paint. If you want to be a teacher, then teach. If you want to be an entrepreneur, then do that. Decide what’s important to you, not what society or anyone else dictates. Listen to your inner calling and trust that the Universe will always have your back.

  • Take responsibility for your life

Taking responsibility for your life means taking responsibility for your thoughts, feelings, words and actions. How you feel happens in your body and is a result of what you and only you, think. The words you speak come from your mouth and voice. The actions you take, are taken by you. What this means is that nobody can make you think, feel, say or do anything. Nobody can push your buttons unless you allow them to. In the same way, you can’t control how other people respond to you as they respond from whatever is going on in their own mindset.

  • Avoid playing the blame game

It may be tempting, but don’t play this game; blaming your parents, friends, your upbringing or the dog for how you’re feeling or what’s happening in your life, just keeps you in victim mode and doesn’t allow you to change your situation.

  • Decide to be happy

The secret of life that will help you attract everything you have ever wanted is to be happy. You don’t need the fancy house, the most expensive car, the money. These things don’t matter in the grand scheme of life. Do what makes you happy. Spend time with people who make you smile. Do more of what makes you happy and life will deliver more to be happy about. Love life and life will love you back. And know that happiness is not something you can buy and can never be found in accumulating material things. Happiness really is an inside job; to be happy is a decision you make and the gateway to happiness is practicing gratitude on a daily basis.

  • Live in the present moment

Life is now. There is only one moment, now. The past is history, the future is a mystery, so there is only now, this present moment. Take responsibility for this moment and make the best of it whatever situation you may be in.

  • Expect the best

Say yes to life and be open to new experiences. You may not always get what you want, but you will always get what you expect, and what you think you deserve, so expect the best for yourself, for others and for the world at large.

  • Remember your connection to nature

There is a force, an energy that we all share, and it is the power that connects us all to each other. It is the source that you recently came from, the invisible intelligence we all came from and it is the energy that we will one day, all return to. Don’t ever forget that we are all one; you are part of something spiritual and eternal.

  • Be of service

You will come to know that there is so much prejudice, criticism and judgement in this world. Never do anything to add to this negativity. Use your natural gifts and talents to make the world a better place.

  • Meditate

This is such a beautiful and beneficial practice and the earlier you start, the easier it will be for you to experience being peaceful, kind and accepting. Meditation truly does allow you to remain connected with your inner voice, your intuition and offers so much relief from any difficulties you may encounter in life.

Remember that life really is beautiful, so don’t be afraid to live it.

Believe in yourself and never let anyone dim your splendidly bright light.

I love you my dear, sweet Fabio, not only for who you are, but for who I am because of you. You are my joy, my light, a window to my past, a mirror of today, a door to tomorrow and the keeper of my heart forever.

You are the most precious and most beautiful blessing your wonderful and special mama could ever give me.

From my heart to yours,

Nana Patrizia x
